Summary 13 - Discovering the island from the sea
Pubblicato Blog of "Three Men in a Boat" September 15th with the title "An island to live in the sea":
Waiting for the feast of the boat, we like the idea of sending a final post closing ... maybe someone can come the desire to venture into a new journey in kayak! Having
still three days left, having completed the circumnavigation during the thirty days provided and kept having to make the last "terragni, we disposed of the clothes worn and sea travelers and tourists to the land: pick up the car from the parking lot the port, which has since become a regular stand at the entrance with lots of bar and daily fee, we go for a stroll on the interior of the island with the intention to visit its famous archaeological sites and discover its rustic and popular canteen.
Let's always the beach to sleep and continue to set up your tent and inflate the mattress for us because the journey is not yet completely finished and we have no desire to abandon the habits adopted for a whole month in a kayak.
After seeing the excavations at Malia and Gournia and have walked among the ruins of temples, lodgings and Minoan Knossos and Phaistos reach us disappointed in the first eye-catching covers on pots and reinforced concrete columns, according to many Spaces are forbidden to visit because it was unsafe and criticized the reconstruction of the buildings can undo any magic ... you no longer feel to tread the same ground that more than 4000 years ago saw the birth of one of the most elegant and sophisticated civilizations in history, but rather to enter a fake backdrop rebuilt only to attract tourists ...
soon convince us that you have chosen the best way to visit Crete , kayaking, sea because the island is much more beautiful!
We told you about the turtles, of griffins and goats?
Only the sea could enjoy a natural show so appealing.
Griffons, which are perhaps eagles or perhaps mythical bird (we will study the return!), They hover on the rocky cliffs, barren and uninhabited, which is on the north coast on the west; have attracted our attention with their light flight, continuous and circular, never beat the feathered wings followed the updrafts and stretched his neck white down looking for potential prey. The first time you are, another ten units have their silhouetted figures high in the sky, distant but powerful and a little scary ... there must be many wild rabbits in Crete, such as those we found in great numbers on the only island of ' Cretan archipelago on which we've been during the circumnavigation, Imeri Gramvoussa, and in the evening filled the beach of their long ears and hairy. Even
and lambs must be for them the easy prey, but this is no time of births and rugged cliffs overlooking the sea we have seen grazing peacefully only large specimens with long hair and dark: sheep and goats climb along feasible paths only out of their sockets, and often come down to the water to lick the salt that remains on the rocks . Once we were surprised by a big buck that came out of a cave just above our kayaks and proudly announces his presence by ringing the bell around the neck ... in the evening we had often to follow their evolution along the steeper slopes the mountains and sometimes we have been concerned to see them fall into the sea, so they seemed suspended in space.
If we have not met with the Dolphins, who also attend the Cretan water, We were lucky enough to weave our way with that of sea turtles: the whole northern coast is dotted with sandy nests, made visible by the volunteers with three foot iron fences and low in straw to protect the nest from predators and umbrellas to facilitate the race to the sea of small, even on the beach we found a nest of Nikos, well signposted and protected, but the most incredible meeting took place in the south coast, and Loutro Agios Markos, where the high and rocky coast, almost devoid of sandy beaches, it is not practiced by the turtles.
The first was the terminus of the waters between the rocks while we were having lunch under the hot African one day of calm, the last before the arrival of the Meltemi, and it seemed curious to know when we would leave by "his" beach, and the second is passed between our two kayaks, flying just below the water surface as if it were all alone at sea and has not taken us for a long time, giving us time to follow it, to filming and took some pictures ...
E 'was a very exciting encounter that has once more confirmed the richness of the sea and the greek beauty of a kayak trip!

Waiting for the radio party, we like to send a last closing post... perhaps someone can feel the desire to try a sea kayak adventure trip!
Still having three days free, we passed from the sea travellers to the land tourists: withdrawn the car from the harbour parking, in the meantime became a regular parking with a bar at the entry and a daily tax, we wonder to visit the island, its famous archaeological sites and its rustic and popular kantinas. We first visited Malia and Gournia sites to walk between ruins of rural residences and minoic temples. Festo and Cnosso disappointed us: in the first one they put reinforced concrete up to amphoras and columns, in the second many spaces are interdicted. Above all the criticized reconstruction of the minoic palace annuls the magical atmosphere: you can't feel to walk on the same ground of more than 4000 years ago, when and where was born one of the most elegant and refined civilizations of the ancient world, but you just feel to enter in a false scenography entirely reconstructed to attract tourists.
We immediately convince us to have chosen the best way to visit Crete, by kayak: the island from the sea is really more beautiful! We'd like to speak about turtle, griffons and goats?
Only travelling from the sea, we could enjoy such a seductive natural show.
The griffons, perhaps eagles or mythological birds (we will study at home!), circled on the rocky and uninhabited promontories, both on the northern and western coast; they attracted our attention with their light, continuous and circular flights, without never beating their wings, following the ascensional tides and stretching out the white neck to the search possible preys. First time six, another ten griffons imprinted their figures on the sky.
Rabbits, lambs and kidskins must be easy preys for griffons.
Sheep and goats climb along unpracticable paths and they often go down up to the water to lick the salt remained on the rocks. Once a tiime, we were amazed from a big he-goat, emerged from a cave straight above our kayaks, announcing its presence with a continuos tinkle of the suspended cowbell on its neck.
We have not met the dolphins, but we were lucky enaugh to crossbreed some big sea turtles: the northern sandy coast is disseminated of turtle nests, made visible by the volunteers with iron protection to facilitate the run toward the sea of the baby turtles; the most unbelievable meeting happened in the southern coast, in Loutro and Agios Markos, where the tall and rocky coast, almost entirely deprived of sandy beaches, it is not very practiced from the sea turtle.
The first one appeared on the water among the rocks while we were taking lunch, under the warm African sun, Seemed it and curious to Understand When We Would Have Gone "ITS" beach, passed the second Among Our two kayaks, flying on the surface like it Was Completely alone into the sea, giving us the time to follow and to film com.
All Those meetings Confirmed excited us more time oz the wealth and beauty of the Greek sea and the adventurous spirit of a sea kayak trip!

Summary 12 - Meetings and friends
posted on the blog of "Three Men in a Boat" September 9 Article entitled "Meetings journey"
Dear friends of the boat, we have now completed the circumnavigation of the island in a kayak in Crete, and honest we are back home after a two-day trip by ferry and then by car, by ferry again and again by car: 10 hours from Ancona to Milan, there seem few?
We are however pleased to send you a few more posts on Crete because we really haunted.
addition to the sea, the coast and wind, Crete impressed us with the character of its people: friendly to tourists and foreigners, open and curious, never bothered by the fact that we occupy their own spaces but rather interested in knowing how happy their land. One evening two sub
offered us fresh fruit and entertained us with a very pleasant conversation, we again found a piece of paper left on kayak with an encouraging message: "Dear friends, Have a good trip and wish to Have the wind with you", one morning a boy shyly approached the kayak still say in English "Your trip is a dream", wherever relevant questions on our journey, compliments of various nature and valuable guidance on where to eat and drink nearby.
Not to mention the strange solidarity which arises from various sources among tourists traveling on the same land that on several occasions has given us very curious characters, a day that we were undecided whether to go back to sea (hit by the waves) or remain on the ground ( windy), we encountered a large group of Germans settled comfortably into a series of small shacks on the beach: we deal with all our "household" their yard tamarisk and in a moment of utter despair, when the wind swirling the fine sand into the eyes closed, I hang the hammock to the two arms stronger and I enjoy a long afternoon nap ... Although German "friends" do not make a turn, indeed we are beginning to ask where we want to go (as if to say, it is too windy, stay here with us) and when we are finally ready to back on the kayak make absurd that leaves us speechless, especially because it does not fit at all in the German ice: Turn on the stereo at full volume and send a compilation of Italian music and warm in Tugging greetings to the tune of "Gente di mare, which he vaaaaaa" ... "Perfect Song" from the kayak and they scream with laughter sbellicano ... then maybe we are not Germans, or simply that not all stereotypes about people are just !
A quiet morning that systems with everything in the lockers of the kayak, a nice gentleman with the bushy white beard approached us to tell us a recurring phrase and other times we have addressed during the trip: "Italians and Greeks, same face, same race ! When we ask for a milkshake glikò Megala (iced coffee with sweetened milk) is always welcome all of the few words of greek who chew with difficulty ... and often the most interesting conversations were those established in two or three different languages, as with the old Kostas, he spoke in thick greek and drew the numbers in the air and us to respond in Italian. Even with Nikos and Maria we understood each other perfectly: When we tried the Coast Guard had just landed near their hut on the sea and they received us like two castaways adrift: they have spoken with the military, acted as interpreters for reassure them about our conditions, have insisted that involved in their party, have again and again filled our plates and our glasses, wanted to know our names and so many things about our trip and at the end of the evening we were filled with gifts, as is fitting with of guests: sweets and chocolate, two large shells and especially a fish fossil found in the bay and kept together with several other samples and a warm welcome by Nikos ... priceless! We close this trip with the satisfaction of having met not only the island but also its inhabitants, along with sailors and mountaineers, fishermen and shepherds, farmers and hoteliers ... maybe it is true that Crete is an island than a continent: the Cretans do not seem islanders but citizens of the world anchored in the heart of the Mediterranean.

Summary 11 - North coast
posted on the blog of "Three Men in a Boat" on 8 September under the title "North Coast":
and we did: we conclude the circumnavigation of Crete in 30 days exactly!
We have always paddled with all possible sea conditions, from flat calm to storm the coast and we arrived safely at your destination: enter the port of Heraklion on August 31 and arrived on the same slide from which we started 30 days before!
It 's a great feeling to finish the turn around an island, a journey which starts and finishes in the same place, a little 'how to square the circle ...
We had a couple of days of strong wind, always opposed, with waves that sometimes hid' s horizon and the islands (because Crete is an archipelago, with a score of islands, islets and reefs surrounding the island mother), so one day we looked in a while and we decided to cross the Bay of Sitia and to focus directly on the opposite end to earn some 'sea, jumping up and down the waves and expecting the worse under his head, waves flying over a week against the high, rocky coast when they return to shore create what we call in the jargon "washing machine" and that perhaps makes it a good idea of where we are stuck ... not last long, however, a couple of hours and then only headwind.
short, the worst seems to finally passed and we are preparing to conclude the last two or three days at sea with the forecasts that give "only" a rough sea!
The north coast of Crete, however, is not suited to a kayak trip, when it is wild is just too much and does not allow landings in rocky coves and when it is occupied it is always too much and can not get off of chairs and umbrellas perfectly aligned on beaches.
Luckily you can still find fishing villages off the beaten, as Mochlos or Mironikitas, where life still seems to run slower pace according to the Cretans, we reach the first as an oasis, as we sail with no wind and no waves at last after so many days of rough seas, and the second as a mirage, because the tavern we had drawn on the ground is rather miserably closed and the hike in the hills soon proved vain.
But not all: in fact know the old Kostas and spend another unforgettable evening in the company of this Cretan so hospitable, open and lively desire to restart to make us come round the island in the opposite direction!
also the day when we paddled out more (some 47 km, less than 17 more than the mileage daily average of 30 km!) to find a secluded spot for our tent among the forest of beaches and resorts and clubs, water parks and cruise ships anchored in the port of Agios Nikolaos, we take refuge in a secluded cove on the beautiful peninsula Spinalonga, just beyond the city but far enough away to cancel its noise and other things we understand about the Cretans.
They are able to get some beautiful treks to go fishing in the most secluded, know and appreciate the most beautiful places of their beautiful island and if they can walk to venture into the boat, oars or engine, on the whole, we seems that the Greeks and Cretans in particular, are able to appreciate much of the Italian sea the sun and beaches.
know how to bathe the Greeks and Cretans? Are placed on a hat, straw women and men of cloth, like baseball players, and then immersed in water, so far nothing unusual, but they are able to stay to soak for hours, so much so that sometimes we said goodbye to swimmers who were at sea when we were awakened and were left to soak for as long as we had down the camp, had breakfast and prepared the kayaks, usually two or three hours ... and while paddling off the beach, leaving them looked like they had no intention of leaving the water! One long lasting bathroom the whole day! They sit there chatting and float over normal, with the head neck and chest out of the water will be that some have fins and children are often colored with arms, but mostly swim wholesale walk and talk, talk and talk ... It reminded us of the pasta Mafalda, with all those little heads sticking out of the sea like the pasta, of course!
Sometimes, towards the coast, we have found it hard to understand if it was boe or wetting agents, often because if they remain motionless in the water as if they were asleep ... but then you wake up and when we pass their hats always greet us with a cheery "Yassas," which is the greeting of Crete.
Paddling, paddling we have now completed the circumnavigation of the island!

But not entirely: there we met the old Kostas and spent another unforgettable evening together with that man, so hospitable that we thought to restart the periplus of the island in the opposite wise!
Besides, there was a day when we paddled for 25 miles, 10 more than the daily legs: we wanted a place apart form the resort and discos and aquatic parks and cruise ships anchored in the Agios Nikolaos harbour, so we found a sheltered beach on the beautiful peninsula of Spinalonga, distant enough from the city to annul its noises.
Do you know how the Greek go for a swim? They put on a hat, straw for women and cloth for men, like baseball players, and they dipped in water; they are able to remain there for hours, a long solo swim! They chat more and more while they float, with the head the neck and part of the breast out of the water; they suggest us the sea soup of Mafalda, with all those little heads that sprout from the sea...

Summary 10 - East coast

Sembra che Meltemi not want us to pass the eastern end of Crete rages for days on our two kayaks with a continuous burst of 50-60 km per hour, of course, always to the contrary!
We have, however, now learned to know well both the coast and the sea and so we try to use to our advantage the terrain, when stepping off the mountains protect us and to paddle back to shore when in fact we are exposed along the valleys
flat ... In some cases, however, was very challenging to paddle in a sea that gave the weather forecast storm with winds of 8 in Beaufort, so that one day, in the Gulf of Ierapetra beaten by violent gusts, has approached a speedboat from 150 horses with the second pilot tied securely with a snap auction of water skiing: they wanted to know if we needed help, but between those waves they seemed more scared of us ... we thanked them with two big smiles of denial. Moving to Cape Sideros
instead, the extreme northern tip of the island, this one with a real stone lighthouse on the rocky coast battered by wind and sea, known as downright dangerous for navigation, we found ourselves between mountains of water that break on our kayak and further bubbling was very slow and laborious.
hoped to find refuge in the first cove sheltered from the wind and waves, but we came at a military base not reported on the maps and the three boys call us of course forbidden to land, ordering kindly proceed to the next bay: another 5 km of rough seas, when it was setting sail in the evening and at night without seeing anything is not so nice!
But fortunately for us we found a micro-sand beach and soon after we met the Coast Guard in a tent: the military were brought up to understand that end, we had to do. The hospitality of the local
was excellent and despite everything we spent a memorable evening with Nikos and his friends, around a table laden with Cretan dishes, meat of wild rabbits and cakes homemade cheese, sweets, watermelon and raki.
Among the many rooms and down amid the waves, we have found ways to visit the archaeological site of Kato Zakros, the fourth Minoan palace on the island, "hidden" behind the four taverns that adorn many colorful fishing boats along with the wide natural inlet of the sea of innumerable shades of turquoise.
disappoint the beach instead of Go, with its forest of palm trees that the legend was born from the seeds of dates "spit" from the pirates and who stands up for all the postcards of the island: its exotic atmosphere is indeed ruined by the presence of water games and as much as 6 rows of umbrellas, whose only quality is not to have hats of cloth but woven palm leaves.
Too much confusion leads us to resume immediately, notwithstanding the continuous Meltemi impassive to whiten the sea ... there are still several days and we kept three of "spare" in case of need, but we do everything possible to finish the circumnavigation of 'island in the allotted time of 30 days, hoping in the mercy of wind and sea ...

Meltemi Does not leave us to pass the oriental Extremity of the island: It Blows furiously for days around our two kayaks with 27-32 knots!
We now know the coast and the sea and so we try to advance offshore when the mountains protect us and to paddle near the coast when the wind rises.
Some days it was very difficult to paddle with winds 8 Beauforts: in the Ierapetra bay there were violent gusts, and a motorboat approached us to know if we needed help, but into that sea they seemed more frightened than us...
Passing Head Sideros, the extreme north-oriental point of the island, with a true stone lighthouse on the rocky coast, exposed to the wind and to the sea and known as decidedly dangerous for the navigation, we met mountains of water, broking foamy on our kayaks: paddled there was very slow, difficult and fatiguing indeed.
We hoped to find a shelter bay just behind the head, but unfortunately there was a military base, not signalled on the maps: three boys have obviously forbidden us to land there and have kindly ordered us to continue up to the next bay: more than 3 miles on rough sea, at the sunset!
We fortunately roused one little sandy beach and suddenly the Coast Guard appeard to understand if we were ok. The hospitality of Nikos and its friends was excellent and we spent in Ormos Tenda an unforgettable evening, around a table full up with greek dishes, meat, cheese, sweets, watermelon and raki.
While we paddled up and down the waves, we have had also the opportunity to visit the archaeological site of Kato Zakros, the fourth minoic palace of the island, "hidden" behind the four taverns that adorn the ample bay with some colored local fishing boats.
The Vai beach disappointed us, with its palm grove, that the legend says borned by the date seeds "spit out" from the pirates: its exotic atmosphere is compromised by the presence of the aquatic games and of 6 lines of beach umbrellas, whose unique quality seems to have not the textile hats but made in palm leaves. The big confusion immediately pushes us to come back to the navigation, despite the Meltemi continues to bleach the sea.
We calculated three days "more" in case of emergency, but we would to finish the periplus of the island in 30 days, Hoping in the Clemency of the wind and of the sea.

Summary 9 - South coast

You thought maybe we had been shipwrecked? Instead, only a shipwreck computer, some connection problems and no more ... Now that we have arrived safely in Heraklion, we still want to send messages that we had prepared during the trip for the boat here is the first, the other in the next days, allowing the Internet!
We had some problems with Internet connection and we can only send a new post today (August 22) that the Meltemi, the strong northwest wind that is fueling the fires in Greece, forcing us to land near a luxury resort in the pool and restaurant area with wi-fi under the patio.
The southwest coast of Crete we liked a lot: rocky, barren and not very populated
few villages and many beautiful beaches, many reachable only by boat, in which case, we are definitely an advantage, and even if we use the extra time than the tourist boats, we can then choose to continue or to camp for the night when everyone goes on. In Crete
wild camping is strictly forbidden but is generally not only tolerated but is also widely practiced by the Cretans themselves who, as true knowledgeable of their beautiful island, choose the most isolated coves and welcoming to have the tents in the shade of tamarisk. So we've been in
Sougia, where the long pebble beach is home to a dark true wild camping "organized", complete with fresh water shower (always hot water because the pipes are dark baking in the sun!).
In fact, all the beaches are always equipped with a shower and often taverns offer free sunbeds and umbrellas to customers.
Agia Roumeli, however, we made sure to land in the early afternoon we afford to take a hike in the famous Samaria Gorge, UNESCO for uniqueness and spectacle: the "Iron Gates", in the heart of the park, are just three meters wide and the stream flowing between rock walls up to 300 meters, the narrow passage is very suggestive of the path made of stones placed in the water far enough to facilitate hikers.
Loutro us a little 'disappointed the village of whitewashed houses and blue arranged in a half moon on the sheltered bay and impressive, why not let us land on the beach, very little to tell the truth, overflows with parasols and bathing, but in the cove a little further we make a memorable stop for lunch and see a sea turtle that lingers to browse among the reefs in the crystal. If tourism
held us back, free nature welcomes us!
The arrival in Matala is bubbly, we must land between the breaking waves and attracted the curiosity of some wetting, we wanted to visit the small fishing village atmosphere and hippies among the stalls of colorful ceramics and painted fabrics eat the pita giros "more good travel.
When we pass the extreme southern end of the island we have the impression that the sea will eat the earth, as the waves rise on the rocks sloping down the coast. Again, this could do to compete for the title of "lilliput-lighthouse!
The rest of the coast does not seem to exist: the guides do not mention it and the cards are not even almost scored coastal villages, not to mention the ports. A couple of days ago so we ended up in the "town that is not" a handful of houses clinging to the rocky coast by the name fairy, Tris Eklissis, with colorful murals on the balconies and even the dressing rooms of the beach facilities.
exiting the shelter provided by high mountains overlooking the coast, we stumbled in the Meltemi and today we are unfortunately still a Stop, an unnamed village in the south-east coast off the beaten foreign, whose only attraction seems to be the vast expanse of greenhouses.
We are two thirds of the trip, we paddled continuously for 20 days and soon the wind will allow him to resume the navigation tentare di completare il periplo negli ultimi 10 giorni rimasti.

We're on line again! Do you think about a shipwreck? Just a computer shipwreck, some problems with the internet connection and nothing more. We're arrived in Iraklion in the meanwhile and we want to post the messages already prepared during the trip: here it is the first one, the others in the next days, internet permitting!
We have had some problems with the internet connection and we succeed in sending a new post today (the 22nd of August): the Meltemi, the strong wind of north west that is setting on fire Greece and Peloponnessus, forces us to land near a tourist villagewith a big luxury restaurant, swimming pool and wi-fi area.
We loved the south-western coast of Crete: few villages and so many beautiful beaches, many of them reachable only by the sea; in these beaches, we have a big privilege in comparison to the other tourists because we can choose to go away or to remain and camp.
Free camping in Crete is formally forbidden but it is generally practised.
So we sleep in Sougia, where the long beach of dark pebbles entertains a true free "organized" camping , with a sweet water shower (warm up by the sun!). In Crete, all the free beaches have a shower and the taverns usually offer free beach umbrellas and deckchairs.
We arrive in Agia Roumeli in the afternoon to have time for an excursion in the famous Samaria Gourges, Unesco patrimony for the "Iron doors", in the middle of the natural reserve, wide just three meters and tall up to 300 meters; the narrow passage is made extremely suggestive from the pathway in the water.
Loutro has bit disappointed us: the white and blue cottages on the half moon suggestive bay, doesn't allow us to land because the beach is too small; nevertheless, in another beach we have an unforgettable meeting with a big sea, appearing on the surface of the crystalline water.
The organized tourism rejects us, the free nature welcomes us!
The arrive in Matala is foamy: we must land in a surf zone and we attract the curiosity of some swimmers; we wanted to visit that small village with the hippy atmospheres and in the center, among colored ceramics, we eat the best "pita giros" of the trip.
When we pass the extreme southern head of the island we have the sensation that the sea wants to eat the land: the waves climb on the descending gradually rock coast. We meet a new "lilliput-lighthouse"! The rest of the coast seems to not exists: the touristic guides don't speak of it and the maps don't mark the villages and the harbours. A couple of days after we so land in the "country that doesn't exist": few houses to the rocky coast with a fantasy name, Three Eklissis, with colored murales on the balconies and a organized free beach.
When we meet the Meltemi we have to stop in Ferma, an anonymous village of the south-oriental coast out of the touristis rout: the only attraction seems to be the infinite greenhouses.
We uninterruptedly paddled for 20 days and as soon as the wind allows us, we will back the navigation to try to complete the periplus in the last 10 days.

A Can Of Katydid Candy
Summary 8 - West coast
Pubblicato sul blog di "Tre uomini in barca" il 13 agosto col titolo "Costa occidentale":
Meno entusiasmante di quanto immaginassimo, con una jagged rocky coast and at times occupied by hundreds of greenhouses and citrus orchards, however, hides places of incredible beauty.
Falassarna reach the long beach, among the most popular island for its turbulent water and a thousand shades of blue, a day of strong wind and foaming waves that break on the sandy shore noisy but incredibly steep lead us to go a little further: I discovered a taverna overlooking the sea where we eat so well that he decided to keep us for dinner, taking advantage of the live music of the nearby festival.
The next day, for shopping, we climb up the small village of Sfinari, a country like hanging out time, with a handful of houses along the panoramic road which goes only through the olive groves: a single operator Kafenio with nice, fat, tattooed belting an improbable conversations "itagrechese, honey exposed site close to the hives of the courtyard more leafy tree where the dog is related but not the goat, big blue pots on balconies and bales of hay and crates of onions next to the pick-up only possible way for these rugged mountains and on which dozens of towering wind turbines . A series of low headlands
outlines the costs to the extreme southern tip and it seems that the sea is relentless on the lava rock that stands on the sea floor but that has been frayed in the twisted forms and a little unsettling: it looks like a lunar landscape, were it not for the deep sea and dark, this is clearly fishy because of the many local fishing boats as we landed with the wells loaded with eye for dinner! The last head
hides one of the most beautiful beaches of Crete Elafonissi.
Justly famous for its shades of Caribbean blue water lapping the beaches of pink sand, is no longer "occupied" by troops of bathers who arrive by boat from nearby resorts and taking advantage of two or three tavernas overlooking the Libyan sea offer free (as in Greece) and sun umbrellas.
Only Early morning we enjoy a walk in the shallow waters that separate the island from the mother reaching out to small island south wade little tight without the need to swim, the water barely reaches the knee and the whole sea seems just for us. Let
Elafonissi has not been easy but now the bows of our kayaks have veered to the east and awaits the long and windy south coast the journey continues ... ... and enthusiasm increases

The west coast of C network is not as enthusiastic as we imagined, with hundreds of greenhouses and orange trees, however with places of unbelievable beauty.
We reach the long beach of Falassarna, on of the most frequent beach of the island for its turbulent water and the thousand gradations of blue; we arrive in a day of strong wind and the foamy waves break noisy on the sandy and incredibly tall coast: so we paddle ahead and we discover a tavern leaned out on the sea where we eat so well that we simply decide to have lunch and dinner too, hearing popolar music and eating fresh fish.
The day after, we have to do shopping so we climb at the top of the small village of Sfinari, suspended out of the time, with a few group of houses along the only panoramic road between olive trees: a kafenio with the nice, fat and tattooed manager that laces an unlikely conversations in "Ita-Englis-Greek", honey exposed in the courtyards, great blue amphoras on the balconies and baskets of onions close to the pick-ups.
A series of low promontories delineates the coast up to the extreme southern point and it seems that the sea has attacked furiously the lava rock that has been frayed in twisted and anxious forms: it seems a lunar landscape. The last head hides one of the most beautiful beaches: Elafonissi.
Famous for its turquoise water and rosy sand, it is unfortunately full of swimmers, arrived there by boat from the near tourist places. The day after, early in the morning, we enjoy a walk in the low waters that divide the mother island from the small islan. It was not easy to leave Elafonissi but we turn our kayaks on east direction and the long southern coast is attending us... the trip continues and the enthusiasm increases.

Wireless Phone
When I was a kid we played to the cordless handset (which at that time did not mean to kill zombies on the iPhone). A sentence in the ear that "passed" through a number of people that from time to time until they understood with a different shade after about ten steps was usually quite different from the original. I remember that we do not find anything funny in a game like that until some years later (preadolescienziale always obvious) is always ended with something pornographic at the time was very "rebellious".

Without digressing it's time to dust off that play quite absurd, just because when it stops being a game and becomes a newspaper can become a nightmare.
Creative says: I would like to make a man dressed as a gorilla playing the drums.
Account understand and DIC and : then there is this man dressed as something that plays the drums.
junior assistant communications director understands and says: So this model is stripped and a battery that sounds.
senio assistant director of communications understands and says: Then there's this model or models dressed with background music.
Communication Director understands and says: we Belen that is not a cock with her music that "pulls" at this time.
Administrator managing director (who decides) says: ok, but someone really pay for this stuff, ask me and I found it for free with such an idea.
course it is a provocation but a daughter that always leaves me speechless. An idea before you come to those who must approve the pass through too many minds, certainly too many items that manipulate even slightly, to elicit the approval manager.
I happened many times to present a marketing assistant directors who were nothing but boys in their early twenties children "do not know who I am and hear, "Beautiful, it was okay for me but unfortunately I have to decide, is my boss." and invariably the boss, who then submitted to the head more than he arrived with a thousand more changes as a head chief of all had not yet seen anything bother him because only after that all had undergone head and played with the copings' agency.
So guys marketing and communications companies yourselves this question: "but what the fuck you work do you do?" You're only as carriers of messages humanoids that information flow from one side of Milan, or who have taken because they have the slightest confidence in your decisions?
Take a decision you and take your responsibilities or get out the balls and let us present to decision makers at the top of this pyramid is losing a huge amount of time (there are projects in dance for more than a year!) and especially destroy the whole creative idea of dismantling a tap here and there by making alter (diminutive become a nightmare for any creative) then we find out who does not count.

Summary 7 - The island's peninsulas
Pubblicato sul blog di "Tre uomini in boat "on August 11 under the title" Promontori islanders "
Lunch on the movie set of Zorba the Greek, the beautiful white sand beach where it was the scene of sirtaki danced by Antony Queen.
We deserve it, seeing as we have Just past the cape of Akrotiri pronounced completely exposed to the wind just a day in which Mr. Meltemi decided to give us a taste of his power and blew over 50 mph in the direction opposite of course!
What for centuries has been the favorite refuge for monks and hermits, is now a civilian airport and military busy, but the peninsula is rich in limestone karst and has managed to maintain its appeal over time Wild rugged and inaccessible place. Beat
the field on the pebbly beach of a deep canyon that is accessed almost exclusively by sea or through a steep narrow road only by a few adventurous hikers: the 13 Greek boys who lit the fire between the oleanders bloom then offered us two tasty grilled pork chops ... courtesy between neighbors tent. Among
whitecaps that besides us forward we are also going up and down a lot, we reach the following day, the beautiful city of Hania, where the port has left us a bit 'confused because the entrance is partially blocked by a handful of reefs poorly signposted.
The city's history is curious and symbolic: the Saracens turned the churches into mosques, minarets and bell towers in two centuries later the Byzantines transformed back into churches, mosques and minarets steeples.
The result of this transformation of architecture, to span the centuries, yet with the Venetians and Turks, is a nice puzzle of styles and confessions in Hania has reached its peak: a church visible from the port that has preserved both a minaret a bell, perhaps unique example of peaceful religious coexistence. We really liked
Hania and parking under the ramparts of the lighthouse tall and slender with us ideally for the whole day long, slow and monotonous, easy transfer over low and the beaches filled with hotels, umbrellas and bathing in water as the pasta Mafalda!
Transfer needed to "attack" the two horns of the northwest coast of the island, the first high, rough and steep, with only two landing sites that compel us to force a lengthy journey in stages, on deep water rich in sponges and round long yellow walls decorated by the networks pulled from the sea and the rock hanging tapestries as postmodern, and the second most exhausted but equally rugged and rocky, a wide bay that we keep a safe distance because it's full of new homes and greenhouses on the beach behind reeds. The island of Crete
here opens up a corner of paradise: we arrived yesterday (Tuesday, 10 August) at the end of the world! Right on the part of the second
promontory overlooking two very beautiful islands, one called Agria (Wild), the other Imeri (grown), but both indicated on the cards as Gramvoussa, the smallest has been fortified by the Venetians and the castle on which hours stands a beautiful Greek flag was then used by the Turks as the last refuge of the Mediterranean pirates, who assaulted the 800 around the first so many ships that were soon subjected to a punitive expedition joint British and French ... with the proceeds of piracy The small community had increased to 6,000 people, including prisoners held in the caves ... now there are only rabbits in freedom diomedee night as big as lambs and kids screaming as their throats cut. The islanders
headlands us seduced and conquered, so far from tourist routes, and so comfortable for two lone sailors!

We've Had lunch on the "Zorba the Greek" set, the beautiful white sand beach of The Sirtaki Queen danced by Antony. We have just overcome the pronounced Akrotiri peninsula, Completely Exposed to the Meltemi wind, blowing More Than 26 knots, Obviously Against us!
The Peninsula was a mountain refuge for monks and hermits for centuries, and it is today a civil and military airport, rich of calcareous phenomenas on the coast.
We've passed the night on the pebbles beach at the end of a depth canyon, which is entered only by sea or through an impervious path, crossed by few adventurous excursionists: the 13 Greek boys have offered then us two savoury steaks cooked on the fire.
The following day we've reached the beautiful town of Hania; its hoarbour has left us bit perplexed because the entry is partially obstructed by some not signalled rocks appearing on the surface of the sea. The history of the city is curious and symbolic: the Saracens have transformed the churches in the mosques and the bell towers in minarets, two centuries before the Byzantines have re-transformed the mosques in the churches and the minarets in the bell towers. The result of this architectural transformations, promoted for other centuries with the Venetians and the Turks, it is a pleasant puzzle of styles and confessions that in Hania has reached its apex: a central church visible from the harbour has still preserved both a minaret and a bell tower, perhaps the unique example in the world of a pacific religious cohabitation.
Weliked Hania a lot and the stop under the bastions of the tall and slender lighthouse ideally accompanies us for the day, long slow and monotonous day, a simple and necessary transfer "to attach" the two horns of the north western coast of the island: the first pensinsula is tall and steep, with just two safety points to unload that have forced us to complete the periplus in a no-stop day paddling, along a deep sea rich in green sponges and a rocky cliff decorated by yellow nets, torned by the sea and suspended on the rocks, like post-modern tapestries; the second peninsula is impervious as weel and over an ample bay the island of Crete is open on an angle of heaven: it seems to be arrived at the end of the world!
Just on the head of the second promontory two very beautiful islands they lean out on the sea, one called Agria (wild), the other Imeri (cultivated), on the maps both pointed as Gramvoussa; the smallest has been strengthened from the Venetians and the castle with the Greek flag it has been used as a cove by the last Mediterranean pirates: an incredible community of up to 6000 inhabitants is now represented by a free coomunity of rabbits, running around the kayaks at the sunset. The island
promontories Have Seduced us, so far from the tourist routs and so pleasant solitary for two kayakers!

Summary 6 - First navigation experience
posted on the blog of "Three Men in a Boat" August 7 under the title "First days at sea":
We're finally getting into the spirit of the trip: We always want to discover what lies behind the promontory stands before the bows of our kayaks.
We have gone from Bali, a small village nestled in a sheltered bay just remember that in the name of his namesake in India ... for the rest, nothing of the picturesque described in the guides was discovered there in the night spent on its sandy beach dark. We also met and exceeded
Rethymnon, the third largest city of the island who spread the disorder of its suburbs in the hills nearby, the sixteenth-century Venetian fortress dominated by a large mosaic dome looms over the sea in a strategic position and passing under us in a kayak is simple and effective ingenuity to think of the "ancients" who were able to exploit the natural barriers of rocks and sharp protruding breakwater to protect the entire structure, we "modern", however, give evidence of highly engineered choking with the new port a profusion of heavy tetrapods, certainly functional but definitely not very elegant!
The costs low, sandy and anonymous (To say nothing of the baths in sequence and of the big hotels on the beach ...), followed closely by one of the few highways island, quite a heavy sea, convinces us to paddle off, so off that soon we find ourselves in the midst of the Gulf now determined to focus directly on the other end ... I wonder if the Coast Guard yesterday that the pilot greeted us, as satisfaction ritrovandoci today shows here in the middle!
Along a wild and rugged promontory, cut off from the beaten track and with no village in sight, there is a small secluded and sheltered harbor that welcomes us for the evening and the dinner tables of traditional Cretan taverna overlooks the clear blue sea where we have recently made a last swim, the last of this long day at the beach. After
those inserted during the long journey by car (2 days and 2 nights of travel by ferry, we arrived a little 'twisted!), We added the first points on the island: with this new electronic device you can follow the progress travel on the map of satellite tracking and hopefully in 30 days or so to go back exactly to the point of departure, otherwise someone will come and try out at sea ... perhaps with Radio Popolare BOAT!

We are finally entering into the spirit of the sea kayak trip: we always want to discover what every promontory hides. We stopped in Bali, small village crouched in a protected bay that remembers only in the name its Indian homonym... not at all the picturesque village describes in the touristic guides. We've also reached and old Rethimno, the third city of the island that has scattered the disorder of its suburbs on the hills all around; the sixteenth-century Venetian fortress, dominated
by a great dome, stretches out on the sea in a strategic position: passing there in kayak persuade us to think about the simple and effective talent of the "ancient" to exploit the natural barriers of the sharped rocks in way to protect the whole structure; the "modern", instead, we suffocat the new harbour with a profusion of heavy reinforced concrete elements, surely functionals but decidedly few elegants!
The low, sandy and anonymous coast (with private beaches and lodges on the beach in sequence) surronded by the only island highway, very noisy from the sea, convinced us to paddle offshore, directly in the middle of the gulf.
Along a wild promontory, out of the tourist routs and without any village, we finally finded a small sheltered dock that it welcomes us for the evening and for the dinner: the tables of the typical Greek tavern lean out on the crystalline sea, where we have had our last swimming, the last of this long sea kayak day on the sea.
After those inserted during the long travel to reach the island (2 days by car and 2 nights by ferry), we've added the first points on the island: with this new electronic stratagem it is possible to follow the progress of the trip on the map of the satellite messanger: we hope to exactly return to the point of beginning in 30 days or few more, otherwise someone must like to look for us in the middle of the sea ... Three maybe with the men's boat!

Summary 5 - We finally landed on Crete
posted on the blog of "Three Men in a Boat" August 2 with the title "We landed"
And twice: the first line of the ferry that took us to Iraklion and the second from the kayak end of the first day of paddling!
Indeed, the first half day, because we only go to sea at 4 in the afternoon, after spending two hours on the slide of the marina to equip the whole point of the kayak and after having thrown three more hours looking for an internet connection reliable and economic hardships ... you save (and swearing by Mauro) but thanks to the kindness of the clerks of the store we came to the head of every computer problem and now we can post sitting quietly by the sea, the sound of cicadas that appear in sync with the waves breaking on the shoreline ... ah, loneliness, silence, 'darkness: the freedom of a typical trip in a kayak!
have covered only 18 km and the first hour we used to leave the port, the breakwater was so long! Then a giant concrete stadium close to the outskirts of the capital of Crete and a thermal power plant with little more than the many painted Greek vessels colored blue and orange ... in short, an uninviting landscape, but many across the foaming waves, many voltanti fish on our way and that makes a strong breeze against our slow pace but the sunset is almost as hot water from the sea!
We put the tent in a sheltered corner of a beach occupied by local fishermen and their huts equipped with every comfort, from kitchen cupboards to be suspended under the tectorial hammocks stretched between the pine trees ... the matron greeted us from afar in Italian with a "Bravo, bravo," which made us understand that they have been accepted in the small seaside community ... it will be a dream night!

Summary 4 - Least necessary
posted on the blog of "Three Men in a Boat" July 29 under the title "bare minimum"
Stowed everything in three watertight compartments of each kayak: tent, mattress, sleeping bag, camp kitchen, water (lots of water, at least 12 liters per head in the summer if they consume about 3 liters per day, if not more!), Food dishes, glasses and cutlery (those
fold up and almost disappear, taking up minimal space!), A couple of spare shirts (each trip, Tatiana likes to draw a new one this year was inspired by the Palace of Knossos, of course), a suit of the national federation that has accompanied us in Scotland in 2008, a few books Reading (5 weeks because they can become very long if the weather keeps you grounded!), a travelogue: Tatiana year will also use a voice recorder, because they often complain of losing the thoughts born at sea and captured the feeling remains orphan of the words will be guaranteed to have the updates for People's Radio! And then
kayak, paddle, splash, jacket, shirt and lycra shorts, shoes, jacket water (because you never know, maybe that one day of rain spouts that the seasonal average damage on Crete in August!) and again costumes, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, first aid kit (for men) and repair kit (for boats), tow ropes and various security systems, earth sandals, socks and batteries for the cold nights.
Electronic equipment is growing from year to year and require an almost maniacal attention: a VHF, 2 GPS, a locator satellite, a mini computer to update the blog, a recorder, two phones, two cameras, three video cameras (which will lead you in the head with a welder's helmet ridiculous!) and some other deviltry like this ...
They all (or almost) with rechargeable batteries, so we are equipped with many beautiful car chargers, 2 batteries and 2 solar panels: a journey into the renewable energy!
Mounted on the rear axles of the kayak, the panels will be necessary to reload all of our scrap metal, including the front lights and my shaving razor!

We store everything in the three watertight hatchs of each kayak: tent, air mattress, sleeping bag, kitchen, water (few water, at least 12 litres: in the summer we consume around 3 litres a day, maybe more!), flat, glasses and silver wares (the
refolded, they almost disappear, occupying a least space!), a pair of T-shirts (Tatiana usually draws a new one for every trip: this year she was obviously inspired by the Cnosso Palace!), a jumpsuit of the national federation that we also used in Scotland 2008 sea kayak expedition, some books (5 weeks can become very long with the bad weather!), a diary of trip: this year Tatiana will also have a voice recorder, because she often lose the thoughts borned kayaking and the feeling remain so orphan of their words…
And then kayak, paddle, sprayskirt, lifejacket, shirts and shorts, kayak shoes, watertight jacket (because we may have the only rainy day of the season expected in Crete on August!); and then still hats, sunglasses, solar cream, first aid kit (for man and woman) and repair kit (for kayaks), tow line, sandals, socks and pile for the cold evenings…
The electronic instruments grow year by year and they require an almost maniacal care: a VHF, 2 GPSs, a satellite messenger, a mini computer to update the blog, a voice recorder, 2 mobile phones, 2 cameras, 3 videocameras and some other thing…
All the instruments (or almost) work with rechargeable batteries, therefore we provide 2 car loaders and 2 solar panels to reload lights and beard razor too: a trip with renewable energies!

Aroma-planning Samples
Summary 3 - Organized adventure
Pubblicato sul blog di "Tre uomini in barca" il 26 luglio col titolo "Avventura organizzata":
E’ began studying mad and desperate on charts and guidebooks.
fact, been going on for some weeks: while Mauro is delighted to pass on the GPS all the possible landing points derived from the analysis of cross-charts and satellite maps, I am dedicated to the groom to collect all the tourist guides possible guidance to the trip.
It 's a bit disappointing to see what all the tourist information are given for visiting the land from Earth, not even the pilot books seem to take into account the opposite perspective of the sailors who travel, who instead see the world FROM THE SEA.
So everything must be analyzed on the contrary, if for example driving says there is a beach, it will certainly be difficult for us to land between chairs and umbrellas, the paper says that if the coastal road is dirt, then maybe we will not find the bathing establishments, but if the resort is known then it is also rich in local Night, definitely not suitable for spending a quiet night in a tent ... and so on.
Because you have five weeks to cover the more than 1000 km of coastline of the island, we figured they have to go at least 30-35 km per day, so you have even a few days of margin in the event of bad weather, so we should see if is it really possible to mount the field every night 30 km, in addition to land for rest lunch or afternoon snack or for supplies, if needed, or if there are points of escape along the coast or sheltered places ...
short, long hours of lectures dedicated to the evaluation of information collected and the transcript of the news paper on the curious: I wonder if the marina of 200 berths in Paleohora built long ago has now been terminated? There will still be pink beach on the island of Elafonissi? And the sheltered bay of Kissamos to the sails will be suitable for our kayak?
It 's almost a trip before the trip and is perhaps one of the most exciting ...

It is beginning the crazy and desperate study on the nautical maps and on the tourist guides.
Really, it has already been going on for a few weeks: while Mauro transfers on the GPS all the possible places to land, find out by the cross analysis of nautical and google maps, I'm devoting myself to reed the tourist guides to pick up all the useful indications for the trip.
I'm disappointed, because all the tourist informations are given for visiting the world from the land, and they don't keep in mind the opposite perspective of a sea trip, when the traveller discovers the world from the sea. So every thing must be analyzed contrarily: for example, if the guide says there is a beach, it will certainly be difficult for us to land there, among sun ombrellas and deckchairs; if it says there is a dirt road along the coast, maybe there we won't find a beach resort; instead, if there is a touristis place, then it will be decidedly difficult spend there a relaxing night; and so on.
Having 5 weeks available to cover the 500 miles coastline of the island, we've calculated to paddle at least 15-18 miles a day, to also have few free days in case of bad weather; we owe therefore to understand if it is possible to put the tent every 15 miles indeed, besides landing for the break lunch or for the snack or for the restocking, or if it is simple to find a sheltered area in case of necessity.
In short, long time of readings, devoted to the evaluation of the picked informations and the transcription on the paper of the curious news: who knows if the new Paleochora harbour with 200 boat places is now finished? It still be a pink beach on the islet of Elafonissi? And will be the Kissamos bay, mended for the sails, also available for our kayaks?
It is almost a trip before the trip, and it is maybe one of the most exciting moments.

Real Life Example Of A Supplementary Angle
we're off.
Every day I spend time looking at the various sites that collect the Italian countryside. I'm talking about all the campaigns, the real ones approved by the customer and aired. Schedule in a media plan. I am not speaking of favors, ad hoc campaigns for prizes that probably will not come, of ads for shops or hairdressers.
Well I drew a conclusion: this work is dying.
There are no longer the champions, and there are no longer able to express themselves, crushed by the weight of the customer, the dynamics of marketing. So here is deemed illustrious minds that give birth campaigns that even the most poor students of advertising could produce. No one stands out. Everyone might as well write his name under each of these campaigns, because everyone might think. No more envy the work of others, and even think that fortunately I am not passed brief. There is more hunger to creativity, thinking outside the box completely, not caring of the posts. Why so you come to the same point, do what the customer wants. It does not matter if you went from an idea that could win the Grand Prix or a single well that you are ashamed to have thought, in all cases there will come: the mediocrity of an idea that serves to please everyone and anyone.
Just an example: if we say in London "according to what comes out is nice and it works ..." means that we are faced with a very good job, respectable. If the same phrase refers to the Italian advertising we are faced with a job just barely enough, perhaps.
And the discourse is always the same: we do not count anything, and nothing is done to do something at least worthy of being called creativity.
If we counted something would come out the same spot of 20 (twenty) years ago (1990 - 2010).
If we counted something we refused to sign the duo campaigns such as Travolta Hunzicker that episode of the Italian dubbing aside, I struggle to understand given the lack of any sense of a logical time frame.
last episode: John
taking part and piloting his plane hangar, Michelle greets him "playing "(???) the offer. We see the plane take off, but shot scene, John is still there because he can not stay away from telecom. But the plane who the fuck driving it?? It could not just tell lies instead of clowning and then crash a plane without a pilot?

Pentax 110 Lens On Canon
opinion leaders, and new media
If they told me to make a list of those to me are the opinion leaders of today work hard to make a list that exceeds 5 units. But by broadening the definition to marketing then we see that today's opinion leaders to blunt its wagon. There are guys
(completely outside the commercial dynamics, but with a passion for something) that opened a channel on youtube decide the fate of major brands, which in turn spend money to sponsor their products on that channel. Those are the opinion leaders of today, like those who have dedicated a blog, a site, anything that attracts someone's attention.
The strange thing is that someone thought that we could be of opinion leaders, and then invite us to advertise something in our pages, in the form of banner, but not in the form of actual post. In short, what we think we understand that the "product" in question, addressing the key points of the brief but telling our own opinions about it.
In this way, also take a bit 'off guard, we become an average. What is there not a little curious about and why, rather than for economic gratification understand that astronomy is not to be, we decided to accept the "brief" that will come. Starting from a basis comparable to the creative power of a teleshopping taken verbatim from the brief, we will try to do something better, and in case of failure we could always say that user-generated content are not the best of life.
