Summary 6 - First navigation experience
posted on the blog of "Three Men in a Boat" August 7 under the title "First days at sea":
We're finally getting into the spirit of the trip: We always want to discover what lies behind the promontory stands before the bows of our kayaks.
We have gone from Bali, a small village nestled in a sheltered bay just remember that in the name of his namesake in India ... for the rest, nothing of the picturesque described in the guides was discovered there in the night spent on its sandy beach dark. We also met and exceeded
Rethymnon, the third largest city of the island who spread the disorder of its suburbs in the hills nearby, the sixteenth-century Venetian fortress dominated by a large mosaic dome looms over the sea in a strategic position and passing under us in a kayak is simple and effective ingenuity to think of the "ancients" who were able to exploit the natural barriers of rocks and sharp protruding breakwater to protect the entire structure, we "modern", however, give evidence of highly engineered choking with the new port a profusion of heavy tetrapods, certainly functional but definitely not very elegant!
The costs low, sandy and anonymous (To say nothing of the baths in sequence and of the big hotels on the beach ...), followed closely by one of the few highways island, quite a heavy sea, convinces us to paddle off, so off that soon we find ourselves in the midst of the Gulf now determined to focus directly on the other end ... I wonder if the Coast Guard yesterday that the pilot greeted us, as satisfaction ritrovandoci today shows here in the middle!
Along a wild and rugged promontory, cut off from the beaten track and with no village in sight, there is a small secluded and sheltered harbor that welcomes us for the evening and the dinner tables of traditional Cretan taverna overlooks the clear blue sea where we have recently made a last swim, the last of this long day at the beach. After
those inserted during the long journey by car (2 days and 2 nights of travel by ferry, we arrived a little 'twisted!), We added the first points on the island: with this new electronic device you can follow the progress travel on the map of satellite tracking and hopefully in 30 days or so to go back exactly to the point of departure, otherwise someone will come and try out at sea ... perhaps with Radio Popolare BOAT!

We are finally entering into the spirit of the sea kayak trip: we always want to discover what every promontory hides. We stopped in Bali, small village crouched in a protected bay that remembers only in the name its Indian homonym... not at all the picturesque village describes in the touristic guides. We've also reached and old Rethimno, the third city of the island that has scattered the disorder of its suburbs on the hills all around; the sixteenth-century Venetian fortress, dominated
by a great dome, stretches out on the sea in a strategic position: passing there in kayak persuade us to think about the simple and effective talent of the "ancient" to exploit the natural barriers of the sharped rocks in way to protect the whole structure; the "modern", instead, we suffocat the new harbour with a profusion of heavy reinforced concrete elements, surely functionals but decidedly few elegants!
The low, sandy and anonymous coast (with private beaches and lodges on the beach in sequence) surronded by the only island highway, very noisy from the sea, convinced us to paddle offshore, directly in the middle of the gulf.
Along a wild promontory, out of the tourist routs and without any village, we finally finded a small sheltered dock that it welcomes us for the evening and for the dinner: the tables of the typical Greek tavern lean out on the crystalline sea, where we have had our last swimming, the last of this long sea kayak day on the sea.
After those inserted during the long travel to reach the island (2 days by car and 2 nights by ferry), we've added the first points on the island: with this new electronic stratagem it is possible to follow the progress of the trip on the map of the satellite messanger: we hope to exactly return to the point of beginning in 30 days or few more, otherwise someone must like to look for us in the middle of the sea ... Three maybe with the men's boat!
